'All Muslims are not terrorists but,all terrorists are Muslims'
Have you heard or read something of this nature before? I have,online. This is yet another misconception about Islam and Muslims that needs clarification.
No thanks to media houses worldwide,especially the western media that have used consistently such words as 'Islamic terror groups', 'Islamist terror groups' or 'Islamic jihadist ' or simply 'Jihadists' to refer to terrorist worldwide. Such continuous abuse of Islam and Islamic terms had gone a long way to generate such a wrong and unfair misconception as the one above. But,what are the proves that Islam does not encourage terrorism while,according to the Quran certain verses and hadiths supports conflicts and bloodshed,Muslims are encouraged to kill and die for Islam!
You maybe confronted with such war verses from the Quran as follows:
(2:191-193) - "And kill them wherever
you find them, and turn them out from where
they have turned you out. And Al-
Fitnah [disbelief] is worse than killing...
but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving
and merciful. And fight them until there is
no more Fitnah [disbelief and worshipping of
others along with Allah] and worship is for
Allah alone. But if they cease, let there be no
transgression except against Az-Zalimun (the
polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.)"
Here's another:
Quran (2:244) - "Then fight in the cause of
Allah, and know that Allah Heareth and
knoweth all things."
This is third and last I would present...according to them,the Quran contains over hundred of such verses.
Quran (2:216) - " Fighting is prescribed for
you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that
ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and
that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But
Allah knoweth, and ye know not."
If you are confronted with these verses by a non-Muslim and asked to defend yourself and your religion, can you,won't you,too, be thinking otherwise... you know, like denouncing Islam as some people have stupidly done? Most would at least be worried and confused...unsure of what to do...really, I won't blame them...I mean, it's only human to reflect. But I tell you this,don't be shaken...as God had advised the prophet, seek out help from Islamic scholars around you,or better still,go and learn more about your deen by reading more Islamic texts and watching Islamic videos too...you can even join Islamic groups online...please, don't denounce Islam until you have exhausted all these means of information. I know, before you go halfway with your research, you would find the truth. Now,back to the matter.
I want you to know, for starters that Islam is truly peaceful and that the prophet NEVER raised his hands in retaliation until he was permitted to do so. I also want you to know that except for a handful,the companions and the first set of Muslims were the ordinary and poor of the society. The powerful and the influential formed the bulk of the non-believers.
Despite the odds,the prophet and his little group of believers remained adamant and resolved on their decision to stop the worship of gods of wood and stones. This poses a serious economic threat to the Bani Quraish,the prophet's clan which doubles as the custodian of the Ka'aba which as at that time,served as the store house for the hundreds of gods of the Arabs.
They felt threatened that should people be discouraged from worshipping their gods,with time,the economic benefits they enjoy from keeping these gods would cease and there would be less commerce in Makkah as a result. This was one of their greatest fears. It's a long story that would take a lot of time to narrate. However, I shall brush through it for the sake of the discuss.
To cut the long story short,in order to maintain the status quo,the powerful non believers,decided to pick on the poorest and the weakest of the prophet's followers and torture them until they denounce their new faith. They would have loved to pick on the prophet himself if not for the protection of God through his uncle Abu Talib,a non-muslim and his wealthy wife Nana Khadeeja. The point I'm trying to make here was that the early Muslims endured a great deal of persecution in Makkah some died during this trying period. It was during this persecution that the prophet lost his loving wife and caring uncle who, unfortunately died a non believer despite being so useful to Islam. Khadeeja was one of the early Muslims and matyrs of Islam.
It was after 13 difficult years in Makkah that he received the directive to leave Makkah. On settling down in Medina,the prophet enjoyed a relative peace of mind which infuriated the Makkans. Islam had finally found a place of solace and had started to flourish in its new found abode.
In their bid to get at the prophet and the Muslims, the properties of those that left Makkah and travelled to Medina with the prophet were plundered, looted and taken to Syria in a caravan for sale. This was the cause of the battle of Badar.
It was a battle to claim what was rightfully theirs. It was their properties that was looted and taken to Syria, therefore, fighting the battle was like defending their properties. During this war,the non-believers suffered a humiliating defeat in the hands of the Muslims. The non-believers were over a thousand in number while the Muslims were just 313 in number.
The defeat was painful and the loses was very enormous to the Makkans,so,in retaliation,they raised another army to confront the prophet and his followers,the battle was fought by the foot of Mountain 'Uhud.
The battle was fast turning in favor of the Muslims from its inception this made some fifty archers that were positioned by the side of the mountain to join their winning colleagues down hill. A reserved batch of horsemen from among the Makka's army saw this loophole and took advantage of it to set up an ambush which saw to the near defeat of the Muslims. During this war,the prophet lost his uncle seyyidina Hamzat. There was another battle which was brought right up close to Medina. The unbelievers had grown in confidence to such an extent that they raised a huge army to encircle and annex Medina and put an end to the prophet and Islam altogether.
The short notice left the muslims unprepared and to engage the infidels at the outskirt of Medina would be sucidal. This prompted the digging of a trench around Medina by the companions, hence,the name,the battle of the trench.
I can continue on and on and you would always see the defensive nature of the Muslims in every battle...including the capture of Makkah.
There was a truce of Udabiya which was to ensure there was a ten years cease fire. During this truce,Muslims can enter Makkah unharmed just as Makkans can come to Medina unharmed and that anyone can revert from one religion to the other.
The Muslims took advantage of the truce and won over a lot of followers which infuriated the pagan Makkans to the extent that they broke truce. By this time, Islam had spread like wild fire across the Arab world. So much so that the army raised for the capture of Makkah was so overwhelming that the Makkans didn't put up a defense.
Now,the prophet had all it takes to take revenge for the persecutions he suffered in the hands of the infidels. But,instead, what did he do? He forgave and overlooked their wrongs! Such is the character of the Muslims.
"Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men;- for Allah loves those who do good;-" Q:3:134
