Ramadhan Day 18-19:Lailatul Qodri & 'Itiqof

Subhanallah wal Hamdulillah!

It is here again, the GREATEST thing that can ever happen to man...it is just by the corner....it is the LAILATUL QODRI ULTIMATE SEARCH!

According to scholars, the Prophet was informed by God Almighty of a servant by the name 'Samu'ul Ghazi'. He was a warrior during his time and he spent a thousand months fighting in the cause of God Almighty. The Prophet was reported to have been envious of this laudable feat and had requested that God gives us,his followers a chance to accrue the kind of reward that is given to Samu'ul Ghazi. In response,God Granted us, the Prophet's followers a night,a night of POWER whose measure of reward for those that witness the Night is as though we did what Samu'ul Ghazi (believed in some quarters to be in person of the Biblical SAMSON) did...the reward of striving in the cause of God for a thousand months!

Another narration has it that Moses asked whether God Almighty would Bless anyone the way He Has Blessed him. According to him,Moses,he is able to talk to God Directly without any intermediary of any sort. Other prophets receive messages from God through Angel JUBRIL (Gabriel). Moses actually had healthy chats with the Creator. Wow!

However,Moses got the shock of his life when God Responded that there shall be a Prophet after him,Moses, whose followers shall be granted a night during which there shall be NO VEIL OR BARRIER between them and God Almighty. Moses was made to realize that between him and God are 70 000 veils and barriers!

Now,these are the two most famous stories about Lailatul Qodri. We also have series of ahadith on the subject matter. I would not bother you with the lengthy literatures of the hadiths,I would just relate the messages of a couple of them.

There's this famous hadith in which the Prophet was asked as to which night among the nights of Ramadhan that this night falls. The Prophet response did not specify a day, but,it however, gave a range of days within which we can search for the night. He was reported to have asked us to keep night vigils in its search within the last ten days! There's also the all inclusive chapter of the Quran that was revealed what happens that night. It goes thus:

I seek refuge with God from Shaiton (Satan) the accursed,in the Name of God the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

(1.)We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power:

(2.) And what will explain to thee what the night of power is?

> (3.) The Night of Power is better than a thousand months.

(4.) Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission, on every errand:

(5.) Peace!... This until the rise of morn!

Q:97:1-5

From the above verses, there's no doubt that the said night is a beautiful night. Angels shall descend in droves that and the SPIRIT (believed in some quarters to be Angel JUBRIL) can you imagine yourself missing out on such a night...countless numbers of angels floating in the air for one and only one purpose...to deliver your prayers to God ASAP which guarantees the granting of all your wishes....so...what shall assure your not missing on this noble night???

The Prophet was reported to keep night vigil throughout the last ten days during which we are to expect the night. Some would say keep vigils on the odd numbered days, others would say,SPECIFICALLY,the 27th or the 29th of Ramadhan is the D day. Can't be sure, can you ???

The Prophet wasn't specific about the day....coupled with the fact that he and his family keeps night vigil throughout the last ten days,I would, therefore, recommend that you do as the Prophet did....keeping vigil throughout the last ten days! Now,how did the Prophet keep his night vigil???

It is a popular tradition ofthe Prophet to confine himself in the Mosque during the last ten days of Ramadhan. The Prophet would worship his Lord day and night in the Mosque in anticipation for the night. This is what we call 'Itiqof.

During 'Itiqof, you are resident in the Mosque, you take both Sahoor and Iftar within the Mosque's environment. Worldly affairs and activities are at their bearest minimum...you are not to leave the Mosque unless for life threatening reasons...or its likes. After Sahoor till Iftar, engage in worship related activities and religous lectures at least 75% of the time...no politics or business transactions during this period...strictly religious activities all the way...especially during the night.

Anyone can enter into 'Itiqof,be you male or female, just ensure you do it in the Mosques where Jumu'a prayers are performed...other mosques are no option.

The Prophet was asked by Ummul Mumineen about what supplication he recommends for the Night. The Prophet recommended "Alluhuma innaka 'fuwun tuhibul 'afwa fa 'afwani" Meaning my Lord, thou are the Acceptor of Repentance,You like to Pardon, so,Pardon me."

That doesn't mean you can't make other forms of prayers, just ensure you make a lot of this one as well. Apart from the multiplying effect your good deeds and acts of worship accrued during this period, prayers are answered without any doubt in the most beautiful way!

Therefore, do not hesitate to hunt down this Glamorous Night so that you don't miss out on the greatest Bonanza opportunity of all times.

Salaam.
