Healing Broken Bonds: Uniting an Extended Family through Quranic Wisdom and Prophetic Guidance

In today's fast-paced world, maintaining strong family bonds can be a challenge, especially in extended families where distances, differences, and misunderstandings can lead to fractures. However, the teachings of the Quran and the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad offer profound insights and strategies to heal these divides and unite a broken extended family. By embracing these timeless principles, families can restore harmony, compassion, and mutual respect.

Embracing Forgiveness and Mercy

One of the fundamental teachings of Islam is the importance of forgiveness and mercy. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtues of pardoning and letting go of grudges. Surah Al-Furqan (25:63) reminds believers that are the servants of the Most Merciful are those who "walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace."

Encourage family members to approach conflicts with an open heart and a willingness to forgive. Holding onto resentment only perpetuates divisions. Reflect on the story of Prophet Joseph (Yusuf), who forgave his brothers despite their betrayal.

Ordinarily, as a human being, it's natural to seek justice and redress at all cost. But, as a Muslim, it's a little different especially when family ties are involved. You MUST be ready to forgive and forget otherwise, it will be extremely difficult to connect with kith and kin. Yes, sometimes, you look stupid when you choose to forgive. But, is it not better to be Stupid for the All Knowing and All Wise than to prove smart about issues???

Establishing Effective Communication

Effective communication is crucial for resolving misunderstandings and addressing differences within an extended family. The Quran acknowledges the power of kind and thoughtful speech. Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70) highlights the importance of speaking gently, saying, "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice."

Encourage family members to engage in respectful conversations, actively listening to each other's perspectives. Practicing empathy and understanding helps bridge the gap between generations and varying viewpoints.

Thank God for the advancement of technology, especially, the Social Media which makes it extremely to communicate with one another irrespective of distance and time zones. Wherever you might find yourselves in the world, it's now possible to conduct real time meetings make very important decisions without having to leave the comfort of your respective homes. Muslims should seize this opportunity to foster closer contact and relationship with family and friends.

You might decide to schedule a weekly meetings on Whatsapp, Facebook or even Zoom. You might even make it a monthly thing, it all depends on the uniqueness of your situation. The Most important thing is that EVERYONE should be encouraged to speak up during meetings and discuss, freely the solutions to collective and personal problem of the members of the family. When you do that, you're keeping the ties firm and Allah Who had commanded this is watching and would duly reward you. If you don't such platform in place, be the Initiator and take all the rewards to yourself! ☺

Prioritizing Unity over Differences

The Quran emphasizes the unity of humanity, regardless of cultural or ethnic backgrounds. Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13) reminds believers that they were created from a single soul, encouraging unity and cooperation.

Encourage family members to focus on common values and shared heritage rather than dwelling on differences. Remind them that unity strengthens the family bond and promotes a harmonious atmosphere.

Let's look at the WORST of scenarios where most of kith and kin loathe you greatly, however, you are keen on unifying the Family. I'll strongly recommend you approach the younger generation of the Family. Use your own kids as a unifying tool. Urge them on to connect with their cousins and ensuring that they bring them home to you. Whenever you see them, honour them and treat them well. Seize any opportunity that present itself to lecture them on the importance of unity. You would now take it further by creating a Whatsapp group and add all of them onto the Group. There, you can continuously lecture and nurture them create practical examples on how they can be of help to one another.

Hopefully, your siblings, kith and kin may draw inspiration from that to replicate same amongst you. If they don't, you should a subtle way to use some of nephews and nieces to instigate their parents (that are your siblings)  to create a similar platform for you. With persistence, prayers and patience, I believe you'll succeed at it!

Strengthening Ties of Kinship

The Quran and Hadith underscore the significance of maintaining strong ties with relatives. In Surah Muhammad (47:22-23), believers are encouraged to not only obey Allah but also uphold family relations: "So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Quran a great striving." Additionally, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized that maintaining kinship ties leads to an increase in one's lifespan and blessings.

Initiate family gatherings, celebrate special occasions together, and engage in acts of kindness towards relatives. Regular interactions foster a sense of belonging and solidarity.

As stated above, constant communication is key to strong family bonds. While we keep on constant on one another via the online platforms, it's equally important, if not more important to meet physically. We may choose the festive periods to do this. Especially the Eidil Kabeer festival.

There are a lot of issues that are better discussed in physical than via the internet. You can slug out such issues when everyone comes home during the holidays. Learn to use the Holidays well... they present opportunities to promote family ties do NOT waste them! Whoever can not make due to financial issues, other members should raise the cash to ensure he does!!!

Resolving Disputes through Mediation

When disputes arise, Islam encourages resolving them through peaceful mediation. The Quran advises in Surah An-Nisa (4:35) that if conflicts arise between spouses, a mediator from both sides should be appointed to help reconcile.

Appoint a neutral family member or an elder to mediate disagreements within the extended family. This approach prevents conflicts from escalating and offers an opportunity for reconciliation.

A well organized family is able to resolve conflicts with ease. This is because due to the close rapport between members, everybody's character is known to others so, it's easy to stay out of trouble. When a difficult one shows up, it's easy to find a neutral and wise member of the Family to resolve the matter. As for a splintered family, it's a lot more difficult as the mediator would have a tough time to get the conflicting sides to make the necessary sacrifices and compromises that are required to settle the matter!

Exercising Patience and Perseverance

Patience is a virtue highly esteemed in Islam. The Quran frequently encourages believers to remain patient during times of hardship. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153) advises, "O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient."

Encourage family members to practice patience when dealing with challenging situations. Healing takes time, and perseverance in maintaining relationships despite difficulties can yield positive results.

During trying moments, the family must come to the rescue. They must be around to help out physically, mentally and spiritually. They must be ready to do whatever what it takes to solve the problem at hand. This goes a long way to alleviate the problem and keep hopes were high!

It's also highly recommended that families should pick a day, either monthly or weekly for group prayers and supplication. The Prophet is reported to have said prayers that are said between 2 loved ones is NO DOUBT going to be answered. He's also reported to have said that prayers or supplications that are said on regular intervals is the most beloved to Allah. Lastly, Prayers and Supplications are the tools and weapons by which the Believer excels in life!

Leading by Example

Prophet Muhammad's life serves as a model for unity, compassion, and forgiveness. He forgave those who harmed him and treated his companions like a cohesive family.

Encourage family members to exemplify the qualities of forgiveness, empathy, and compassion in their interactions. Leading by example can inspire others to follow suit. While leading by example is the FASTEST & EASIEST way to unify a family or resolve any conflict for that matter, it's important to note that it's extremely difficult to do!

But, looking on the Bright side, it's a DECISIVE quality by which one can prove his unflinching loyalty to do the Will of Allah and Allah is the Most Generous and Most Merciful. It's a great challenge and a sure way to secure Allah's Mercy and Forgiveness. It's the HARDEST Jihad ever (Jihad Nafs) . Whoever excels at it has been greatly favoured indeed.

When you make an example of how things should be done with your actions, you would hardly break a sweat in unifying your family! You'll become a role model...a mentor that others look up onto and the Hardest ever to do for a man is to go against the teachings and ways of his mentor!

The teachings of the Quran and the Hadith of Prophet Muhammad provide a comprehensive guide for reuniting a broken extended family. By embracing forgiveness, effective communication, unity, strengthening kinship ties, resolving disputes through mediation, exercising patience, and leading by example, family members can heal wounds and rebuild a sense of togetherness. It is through these timeless principles that the beauty of Islam's emphasis on compassion, unity, and love for family shines brightest, lighting the path towards a harmonious and united extended family.
