Islam's Perspective on Boyfriend-Girlfriend Relationships

In today’s world, the concept of boyfriend-girlfriend relationships has become increasingly common, especially among young people. These relationships are often portrayed as normal and harmless in modern society. However, from an Islamic perspective, such relationships are not permissible. Islam provides clear guidance to preserve modesty, safeguard chastity, and maintain moral boundaries between men and women.

This blog post shall explore the Islamic stance on boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, the wisdom behind these prohibitions, and the potential consequences of engaging in such relationships.

Islamic Teachings on Relationships

1. Guarding Modesty and Chastity

Islam strongly emphasizes modesty and chastity as core values. Unlawful relationships are a direct threat to these principles, which is why Allah has forbidden any act that may lead to zina (fornication or adultery). Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.”
   (Surah Al-Isra 17:32)

This verse explicitly warns against even coming close to acts that might lead to zina, including casual relationships and inappropriate interactions.

2. Avoiding Khalwa (Being Alone Together)

Islam prohibits men and women who are not married or related (mahram) from being alone together, as this creates an environment where sin becomes easier. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“No man is alone with a woman but the Shaytan (Satan) is the third one present.” -
   (Sunan Tirmidhi 2165)

This teaching highlights the importance of avoiding situations that could lead to temptation or immoral behavior.

3. Lowering the Gaze

Allah commands believers to lower their gaze and maintain modesty in their interactions with the opposite gender. In the Qur’an, Allah says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them...”
   (Surah An-Nur 24:30)

This command helps prevent unnecessary emotional attachment and inappropriate desires, protecting individuals from falling into sinful behavior.

4. Encouragement of Marriage

Instead of engaging in unlawful relationships, Islam encourages marriage as the proper and honorable way for men and women to form a relationship. Marriage is described in the Qur’an as a source of love, tranquility, and mercy:
“And among His signs is this:
That He created for you mates from among yourselves, that you may dwell in tranquility with them, and He has put love and mercy between your hearts...”
   (Surah Ar-Rum 30:21)

Marriage provides a halal (permissible) framework for emotional and physical intimacy while ensuring the relationship is built on mutual respect and responsibility.

Consequences of Falling into Boyfriend-Girlfriend Relationships

Engaging in boyfriend-girlfriend relationships outside the bounds of marriage can have several negative consequences, both spiritually and practically. Allah's words are full of wisdom and guidance for us. Sticking to them is the only way to live life to the fullest!

1. Spiritual Consequences

- Displeasure of Allah:

Engaging in relationships that violate Islamic teachings earns Allah’s displeasure. As Muslims, our ultimate goal is to seek His pleasure and avoid His wrath. The sad part is that even after you have sought for forgiveness and repented, you may still suffer a backlash. In order to maintain a balance, you might be afflicted with a trial or more as a result of your past action. It all depends on Allah's decision.

 - Weakening of Faith:
Such relationships often involve activities that draw a person away from Allah, like lying, secret meetings, or even falling into zina. These sins weaken one’s iman (faith) and connection to Allah. The farther you are from Allah, the closer you are to the Devil. It's that simple.

- Loss of Barakah (Blessing):
When actions are done outside the boundaries set by Allah, they lack barakah. Relationships formed in a haram way rarely result in lasting happiness or fulfillment. If you seek a blessed relationship, pursue it in a blessed way!

2. Emotional Consequences

- Heartbreak
Boyfriend-girlfriend relationships often lead to emotional attachment without the stability of commitment, which can result in heartbreak, betrayal, and feelings of worthlessness. Some even commit suicide. The Female party is worse hit! Her body count increases with every breakup and consequently slims down her chances of settling down with a responsible and responsive husband in the end.

- Guilt and Regret:

Many who engage in such relationships later feel deep guilt for disobeying Allah and regret the time and energy spent on something impermissible. This is an obvious consequence. It's so obvious that Allah made mention of it while warning against Zina in the Quran.

3. Social Consequences

- Loss of Trust:

Engaging in secret relationships can harm trust between individuals and their families, creating tension and conflict. The funny thing is that the Female suffers a great deal. They tend to suffer much more than the male. As they say 'Once caught, twice shy'. People find it hard to trust a woman whose secret escapades have just been revealed!

- Reputation Damage
In conservative societies, being involved in haram relationships can lead to social stigma, affecting one’s reputation and future prospects for marriage. This is the Main reason for the so many baby mamas and single parents that we witness today in our society. Very few are ready to marry single mothers and baby mamas. They're more scared of the possibility of being cheated than they are of taking the burden of taking care of the children they have had in previous relationships.

4. Practical Consequences

 - Unplanned Commitments
Haram relationships can lead to serious consequences like unplanned pregnancies, which often create additional challenges for both individuals and their families. For instance, Single parenting, baby mamas etc.

 - Distraction from Goals
Such relationships often consume time and energy that could be spent on productive pursuits like education, career, or self-development. Some would consider suicide. Those that are strong enough or has enough family support to go on usually suffer setbacks that requires a lot of energy and commitment to overcome.

The Wisdom Behind Islamic Prohibitions

Islamic guidelines are not meant to restrict us unnecessarily but to protect us from harm. By forbidding boyfriend-girlfriend relationships, Islam safeguards:

- Dignity
It ensures that relationships are built on respect, commitment, and responsibility rather than fleeting desires. Lust is so deceitful, we make a lot of mistakes when we follow our lust...our heart desires. We're better off following the well established ways of doing things. Discipline is KEY!

- Family Values
Marriage provides a strong foundation for raising children and maintaining family stability. When you restrict your sexual activities to those you're legally married to, the Probability that your kids would have the best of upbringing is pretty high. Why? Because you'd proudly teach your kids to do as you did and you'll be able to Garner enough energy to guide to the right path. The Cool part is that members of your extended family would be there to help out and ensure that your kids have the BEST home training ever!

- Spiritual Growth:

By avoiding sinful acts, we can focus on strengthening our relationship with Allah. We need to inculcate spiritual exercises, adhkar, most preferably the recommended ones by the Prophet. You may also decide to add more on your own. For instance, you may decide to fast on Mondays and Thursdays and increase the number of times you seek for forgiveness daily. All these shall keep you too busy and occupied to engage in Zina.

What to Do If You’re Struggling with This Issue

1. Seek Allah’s Forgiveness:

If you’ve been involved in a haram relationship, turn to Allah with sincere repentance. He is Al-Ghaffar (The Forgiving) and Al-Wadud (The Most Loving).
_“Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant...”
   (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:222)

Seek for forgiveness and repent. Avoid, like a plague anything that can get you close to such heinous act again. Most importantly, resolve to seek for a spouse the Halal way. Tell yourself that whoever is not ready to toll the Halal way is NOT for you!

2. End the Relationship:

If the person is serious about being in your life, encourage them to pursue marriage in a halal way. Stop paying them visits in their homes. Always meet on neutral grounds and NEVER go alone! This would help keep the Devil away!

3. Focus on Self-Improvement:

Invest your time in growing spiritually, developing skills, and pursuing productive goals. Find and stick with the Best in whatever line of work you choose to pursue in life. It's highly recommended you find the Best of your gender in that field.

4. Surround Yourself with Righteous Company:
Good friends can help you stay on the right path and avoid temptation. They're hard to find but trust me when I say that the quest for them is worth it. They're the ones that ensure that you don't miss Salah in jama'ah. You might be gisting and having fun when one of them would say 'It's time for Salah, let's go and pray!'

Islam’s stance on boyfriend-girlfriend relationships is clear: they are not permissible. However, this prohibition is rooted in wisdom, protecting individuals from spiritual, emotional, and social harm. By adhering to Allah’s guidance and pursuing relationships through marriage, Muslims can enjoy a life filled with love, tranquility, and the blessings of Allah. If you’re struggling with this issue, turn to Allah for guidance, repent sincerely, and strive to align your actions with His teachings. True happiness and peace lie in living according to His will
